The Story Of Bit.ly Case Sensitivity And My Spelling Mistake

Ever had one of those days, where you spend all day working on something, only to find right at the end you messed up the smallest of things which renders your work useless. Lately ive had two such days,

The first being a spelling mistake :( , or more so an added character on the end of a URL. I was creating a linkwheel, but was copy and pasting the links onto the page. I spent a whole day working on backlinks, doing a tonne of web 2.0 properties and profile backlinks. I left them for a day and social bookmarked the lot. Eventually they started showing up in the serps, i went to the page and clicked the link. Damn. The link was like this :

http://www.mylandingpage.com/blahblah”

And yes that ” is the thing that is wrong. I wrote the “a href” tag like this :

<a href=”http://www.mylandingpage.com/blahblah”">Go Here</a>

Now if you look closely, you will see that at the end of my tag, there is two quote marks (“”). Unfortunately this screwed up all my hard work and it was one of those things that i just live and let die. I certainly wasn’t going to spend a few hours trawling through all my link pages to correct the mistake. :(

Next we move on to today. I was doing a few youtube videos to advertise a small product that i wanted to test the waters with. As per usual i was watermarking the videos + a title page at the end. I thought this time i would use bit.ly instead of my usual tinyurl.com. Mostly because it tracks your visitors, including the geo location of the visitor. I finished about 10 videos and was happy with them, uploaded them to tubemogul and forgot about them.

I later decided to check them out make sure everything was sweet. Also for the first time (Stupid me), i decided to check the bit.ly links that i used to watermark the videos. Damn. You see i got a link similar to this :

www.bit.ly/11cHk

But that looks a bit weird. And i want the link to be nice and inviting. So i changed it to

www.bit.ly/11chk

Ok no big change, i just hate it having weird casing. Well big mistake, you see bit.ly relies on casing to create even more unique links. So in all, my videos were wasted as the people following the links were being taken to an empty bit.ly page.

I think this is pretty shite. Nothing against bit.ly, i mean they serve their purpose. But you definitely cant be using them to watermark videos, because who in their right mind is going to type in the URL with case sensitivity (Not many, if any).

Why am i telling you this? I dont really know. Number 1, you should definitely know that bit.ly is case sensitive, as it screwed me over big time. But the biggest lesson to be learned is always test your final product before you replicate. If i had thouroughly tested the first page/video after i had made it. I would have realised my mistake and it would have been no biggie, but instead i wasted two days of work :( . We live and we learn.
