LinkWheel Experiment (Part 1)

If you haven’t read about LinkWheels yet, then you’ve probably been living under a rock. Either that or your still stuck trading links with other webmasters trying to reach the top of the serps the old fashioned way. In anycase, if you haven’t heard about it, then apparently you are missing out (Me included). Not wanting to be the last person on the band wagon, i decided i would give it a try and report here with my results. For this experiment i am using a TV site of mine as it was the easiest to write about.

Now if you dont know what a linkwheel is yet, then just google it. Its the best way to find out about it. And if i just wrote about the many theories about how to build a link wheel, then we would be here all day and we would never move onto what im actually doing :P . Just for your interest though, here is probably the easiest picture to understand.

Note: The above picture is not exactly what im doing. Just gives you an idea!

I have made 5 pages so far all linking to one another, and all going back to my main landing page. The best of these is probably my squidoo lens, which i put alot of effort into and is basically my “main” link as it were. The rest of the pages were basically rehashed, but this is how it goes.

Squidoo :

  • Nice big long intro paragraph
  • About 6 text modules explaining various characters in the TV show
  • 2 RSS modules to give it the new factor everytime google comes.
  • A couple of big black boxes with my links in them.
  • A guestbook
  • A link list with voting mechanism. So that you can “vote” for something.

Everything Else :

  • One homepage, with a big paragraph on the TV show.
  • One page for photo’s (I have a set of 5 photos that i use)
  • One page for embedding Youtube videos
  • Various pages have RSS feeds/Twitter feeds on them
  • On various pages there is links going every which way

Now im sorry to lump the rest into “Everything Else” but they are basically clone sites, all with rewritten content. Essentially they are 5 page websites built with website builders like Weebly that just have a bunch of photo’s and youtube videos on them giving them some nice content.

That basically brings us to the end of Part 1, I didnt want to get too into it, just let you know what i have done so far. But here is some food for thought that i have been dwelling over while doing this :

  • Whats better, a community site like squidoo or a free webpage builder like Weebly? The thing is that squidoo pages have a tonne of outgoing links from everyones page, essentially dividing up the PR juice between them all. However to combat this, they also have a bunch of free links coming into your site because you are part of the community. So you get listed in squidoo directory etc. Actually most of my lens’s have some pretty good PR on them already.  The other side of this is weebly. With weebly all the outgoing links are your own, but all the incoming ones have to made from you aswell.
  • A one page masterpiece, or split off into a 5 page website? This one should speak for itself, the problem with this one is where to put your links back to your site, on all the pages? The homepage of the 5 page site? With the one page outfits (Squidoo, hubpages) there is no issue as it is all just one huge long page.
  • How well do you make your pages? To be honest all my pages (Apart from my lens), look like i made it back in the 1990′s. Flashing graphics, horrible colors, god damn awful backgrounds. But you see, i think this may also be my saving grace. I think i am less likely to be banned, with a web page that looks god damn awful. It doesnt look like im a spammer, just looks like im a 10 year old kid who just learned how to use the marquee html tag. Plus the point of this is to bring in google, not to bring in the visitors.

Till next time…

  1. Hah, interesting experiment lol… though the best way to find out about the LinkWheel, to my reasoning – isn’t to Google it… I’d say to read my original report would be the best way as that’s what started the whole craze… never anticipated for this to get so damn viral, haha.
